Light and Fabric/Fabric-like Materials

During this project, I had to embrace randomness, and the artwork felt a lot more like playing, although as I continued, I got more interested in creating certain results. This development was sometimes irritating but sometimes resulted in surprising but beautiful outcomes. This series experiments with light and its effects on fabric and fabric-like materials such as tissues. One thing that was challenging was considering the orientation of the artwork as the scanner scanned. I often didn’t remember the orientation of the finished work, which resulted in frustration. Between the two series, we explore light on its own and light and fabric, experimenting with what happens when light is shone through material that is still, material that moves, and different colored materials. In the end, I gravitated towards movement and brighter materials. I still think a darker material with interesting texture could be explored with a series of light,s and multiple collaborators could be interesting in the future.

This experimentation with light and fabric could definitely be something explored in the K-12 classroom. Students could pair up and experiment with different fabric thicknesses, light brightnesses, and even colored lights.

  1. Hi Jédé, I love the movement and the randomness of these works. They look like ocean waves and light waves. I wonder how you made them because I feel like it is so hard to capture them in real life. I love that you embraced something new and hope to see more works like this!

    1. Thanks, I remember it was weird at first I tried to pace my motion with the scanner as it moved up, and I played around with the wiggling motion, up and down and left and right. I also tired using multiple lights sources at the same time, moving the light so it'll appear in different parts of the composition.
