Impact 25
At first, when we were assigned the Impact25, I didn't have any idea of what type of project I'd be interested in doing. However, after some time, I thought the idea of using Gartic Telephone to create collaborative animations would be interesting.
One aspect I didn't anticipate was that my knowledge of animation in some way was a detriment because I couldn't accurately predict what the participants wouldn't understand. This was surprising to me, considering I've assisted in teaching animation and taught animation privately, but one thing I believe that helped my previous situations is that I could help students individually, as everyone worked. In the end, I think an explanation showing a Post-it flip book could've been helpful.
This resulted in animations that felt more like a time-lapse than a continuous stream of action. However, when we had our second session, I believe there was more understanding of how the animation process worked through my better explanation, and we saw more full animations. Although at the end of each session, the participants understood how the animation process worked, suggesting a practice round would've been beneficial. If I were to do this again, I'd likely do it in groups of five with practice sessions done first. One reason I was hesitant to do this initially was that we wanted everyone to get the opportunity to collaborate with each other; however, it seems like that is just unfeasible.
Another aspect we learned from was advertising; it became apparent in this project that we would have to step outside of our comfort zone to reach the number of participants we needed. We also leaned on tactics we saw our fellow classmates implement, specifically Kate and Jane hanging posters. Gigi and I went around the school a couple of times to hang posters; however, we think we could've benefited from doing this earlier. It was also a little confusing in the project process. I wasn't sure when we were allowed to start conducting our project, so I think clarification of that in the future would be beneficial.
In the end, I think the project was a success and a great opportunity to practice our education skills.
